IP Testing Guide: Dust, Rain & Water Jet Testing Requirements

Every "IP67" on a spec sheet is backed by a real test someone had to pass. The IP rating tells your customer how well an enclosure keeps dust and water out, and it's governed by IEC 60529 - a standard that's precise about exactly what "protected" means. Get the test wrong and you either overclaim (a warranty and reputation risk) or overbuild (wasted cost). This guide breaks down what each IP digit means and which chamber runs which test.

What does an IP rating actually mean?

An IP (Ingress Protection) code has two digits, defined by IEC 60529. The first digit is protection against solids (dust); the second is protection against water. For example, in IP65, the "6" means dust-tight and the "5" means protected against water jets.

An "X" means that digit wasn't tested/rated. IP67 means dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion; IP5X means only the dust side was rated.

Dust testing: IP5X and IP6X

Dust testing uses a dust test chamber that circulates fine talcum powder around the enclosure under controlled conditions. What separates the two levels:

  • IP5X (dust-protected): The test allows limited dust ingress, but not enough to interfere with operation or safety. The enclosure passes if any dust that enters doesn't cause harm.
  • IP6X (dust-tight): No dust ingress is permitted at all.

For enclosures with cavities or breathing (most electronics), IEC 60529 specifies a vacuum method — the enclosure is placed under negative pressure to draw dust toward any weak points, which is a genuine test of sealing. Category 1 (with vacuum) and Category 2 (without) are chosen based on the product's enclosure design.

Water testing: spray, splash, and jets (IPX3-IPX6)

Water tests scale from gentle to aggressive, and each level uses specific equipment:

  • IPX3 (spray): Water sprayed at up to 60° from vertical, using an oscillating tube or a hand-held spray nozzle to a defined flow rate.
  • IPX4 (splash): Water splashed from all directions (oscillating tube through a full arc, or spray nozzle without the limiting shield).
  • IPX5 (water jets): A 6.3 mm nozzle directs jets at the enclosure from every practicable direction, at a defined flow and distance.
  • IPX6 (powerful water jets): A larger 12.5 mm nozzle at higher flow - a much more severe test for marine, heavy vehicle, and outdoor industrial equipment.

IPX3 and IPX4 spray/splash tests are typically run in a rain test chamber with an oscillating tube or spray head, while IPX5 and IPX6 jet tests use a water jet test chamber with the correct nozzle and pressure. Each level has defined nozzle size, flow rate, distance, and duration - matching them exactly is what makes the result valid.

Immersion: IPX7 and IPX8

  • IPX7 (temporary immersion): The enclosure is submerged to a defined depth (commonly up to 1 m) for a set time (typically 30 minutes).
  • IPX8 (continuous immersion): Submersion under conditions agreed between manufacturer and user, generally more severe than IPX7.

Immersion testing uses a controlled immersion tank rather than a spray chamber. If your rating needs immersion as well as jets, plan for both setups.

Getting IP testing right - practical notes

  • If you only run dust, you have IP5X or IP6X, not IP65. Claiming a water digit you didn't test is a compliance risk.
  • IEC 60529 defines these per level; "close enough" invalidates the result.
  • Vacuum (Category 1) vs non-vacuum (Category 2) depends on the enclosure. Get this wrong and the test is either too harsh or not meaningful.
  • Some products are tested powered or under specified operating conditions; check your product standard.
  • IPX7 (immersion) does not automatically imply IPX5/IPX6 (jets) if you need both, test both, and mark it (e.g. IP65/IP67).
